fenc
Catalan
Etymology
From Old Catalan fe, from Lua error in Module:etymology at line 170: Old Occitan (pro) is not set as an ancestor of Catalan (ca) in Module:languages/data/2. The ancestor of Catalan is Old Catalan (roa-oca). (compare Occitan fen), from Latin fēnum, faenum (compare French foin, Spanish heno), from Proto-Indo-European *dʰeh₁(y)-no-, from *dʰeh₁(y)-. The Old Catalan fe was converted into its modern form, fenc, due to influence from a northeastern dialect, and to help distinguish it from fe (“faith”).
