Etymology

Particularly: “The WP article directly contradicts this, suggesting the sense of fixed: not moving has been part of this term from the beginning. C.f. (deprecated template usage) [etyl] Latin stellae fixae (fixed stars). Can anyone confirm / clarify?”

From earlier fixed star (comet, meteor), alteration of faxed star. Change in meaning influenced by fixed (stationary, remaining in place).
