From Proto-Germanic *fleuhaną, whence also Old Saxon fliohan, Old Dutch flian (Dutch vlieden), Old High German fliohan (German fliehen), Old Norse flýja (Swedish fly), Gothic 𐌸𐌻𐌹𐌿𐌷𐌰𐌽 (þliuhan).
