From Old Norse fyrirbjóða, forboða; compare also Middle Low German vorbeden, which may have influenced it. Equivalent to for- +‎ byde. Compare Swedish förbjuda, Norwegian forby, German verbieten, Dutch verbieden, English forbid, Gothic 𐍆𐌰𐌿𐍂𐌱𐌹𐌿𐌳𐌰𐌽 (faurbiudan).
