13th century. From Old Galician and Old Galician-Portuguese fouce (attested in the Cantigas de Santa Maria), from Latin falx, falcem, from Proto-Indo-European *dhalk-, *dhalg- (“a cutting tool”). Cognate with Portuguese foice, Asturian foz, Spanish hoz.
