  1. A type of hub that allows a bicycle to move backwards without the pedals moving backwards.
    • 2008 September 7, Fraggle, “Freecoasting hub thoughts”, in rec.sport.unicycling (Usenet):
With a typical freecoaster hub, if you are coasting backwards on it and you pedal forwards, it will engage and cause you to pedal backwards.
    • 2013 July 30, Mark Sutton, “New Federal BMX website now live”, in Bike Biz:
The V3 freecoaster has been upgraded to incorporate a thrust bearing which makes it a lot smoother when coasting and engaging.
    • 2017, Bryan Reynolds, Intermedial Theater, →ISBN:
The invention of urethane wheels enabled skateboarding on variable terrain (concrete, wood, plastic, and metal) with increase traction and less friction; the reinvention (brought back from the eighteenth century) and popularization of non-unidirectional twin tip skis enabled skiing backward and forward with equal competence; and the invention of the freecoaster rear bicycle hub enabled rolling (and thus landing) backward as well as forward without the crank arms turning along with the wheels.
