- (often with a particle like ut (“out”), bort (“away”), or i (“in”)) to remove undesired parts (of something, concrete or abstract); to cull, to winnow, to thin, to weed

Usage notes[edit]
Though possibly etymologically unrelated, likely perceived by most native speakers to be from the notion of shaking through a sieve in the form of a galler (lattice).
