Compound of gardu (post, station) +‎ induk (central, literally main), calque from Japanese 一次変電所(いじへンでんしょ) (ijihendensho, primary substation). Compare Dutch energiecentrale (power station, literally energy centre) and Dutch onderstation (substation).
