From Proto-Balto-Slavic *girH-, from Proto-Indo-European *gʷerH- (to welcome, greet, praise). Cognates include Latin grātus (welcome), Old Church Slavonic жрьти (žrĭti, to sacrifice), Old Prussian girtwei (to praise) and Sanskrit गृणाति (gṛṇāti, to praise).
