From Proto-Balto-Slavic *girˀ-, from Proto-Indo-European *gʷerH- ‎(to welcome, greet, praise). Cognates include Latin grātus ‎(welcome), Old Church Slavonic жрьти ‎(žrĭti, to sacrifice), Old Prussian girtwei ‎(to praise) and Sanskrit गृणाति ‎(gṛṇā́ti, to praise).
