From Proto-West Germanic *glimu, from Proto-Germanic *glimō (shine), from Proto-Indo-European *ǵʰley- (to shine), from *ǵʰel- (to shine, shimmer). Related to Proto-Germanic *glimjaną, whence Proto-West Germanic *glimmjan, whence Middle Low German glimmen (to glow) and Middle High German glimmen (to glow).
