From the Dutch phonological spelling of German Gletscher (glacier), from Alemannic German Gletscher (glacier), from French glacier (glacier), from Latin glaciārium (ice plain, glacier), derived from Latin glacies (ice), ultimately from Proto-Indo-European *gel- (cold). First attested in the late seventeenth century as gletser, the spelling gletscher arose in the eighteenth century.
