Etymology

From Old Cornish godbod, from Proto-Brythonic *gwɨbod. Originally a compound of bos (“to be”) with an adjective derived from Proto-Celtic *wid-, from Proto-Indo-European *weyd- (“to know”). Cognate with Breton gouzout and Welsh gwybod.
