From Old Portuguese golpella, from Vulgar Latin *vulpicla, contraction of Latin vulpēcula (fox kit), diminutive of vulpēs (fox), from earlier volpēs, from Proto-Italic *wolpi, from Proto-Indo-European *h₂wl(o)p ~ *h₂ulp ((red) fox). Cognate with Spanish vulpeja, Asturian vulpeya, Occitan volpìlh, Middle French goupil, Old Italian volpiglio.
