From Old Norse grípa, from Proto-Germanic *grīpaną, from Proto-Indo-European *gʰreyb- (to grasp, grab). Cognate with Norwegian gripe, Swedish gripa, Danish gribe, English gripe, Dutch grijpen, German greifen.
