From Middle High German grollen (to debase; lower; humiliate), from Old High German *grollen, from Proto-Germanic *gruljaną (to yell; shout at), from Proto-Indo-European *gʰer- (to grumble). Related to German gellen (to shout), compare (deprecated template usage) [etyl] Dutch grillen (to shiver, shake), English grill (to provoke) and growl.
