From Old French grosele (13th c.), from a Proto-West Germanic *krōsilā,[1] possibly related with *krūs (curly, frizzy). Cognate with Walloon gurzale. For Germanic cognates see Luxembourgish Kréischel. Compare also Dutch kruisbes.
