Etymology

[edit]

häiritä (to disturb) +‎ -kkö; also analyzable as a back-formation from häiriköidä. Coined by Finnish marketeer Matti Viherjuuri in 1976 for an Alko promotional campaign (initiated by then administrative director of Alko Nestori Kaasalainen) that encouraged reasonable use of alcohol. The word was then popularized through the campaign, including by an Irwin Goodman song commissioned for it and released the same year.[1][2][3] Originally, the word was used of people who became disorderly as a result of being drunk; its usage later expanded.
