German

[edit]

Etymology

[edit]

From Halbtag (half a day) +‎ -s (adverbial suffix). Alternative surface analysis, halb (half) +‎ tags (days, during the day).

Pronunciation

[edit]
  • IPA(key): /ˈhalpˌtaːks/, (northern also) /ˈhalpˌta(ː)xs/

Adverb

[edit]

halbtags

  1. (of work) half-time
    Ich arbeite nur halbtags.
    I only work half-time.

Usage notes

[edit]
  • Tends to mean that the person works Monday through Friday, but with reduced hours. It could also be used in the broader sense “working half of the normal weekly hours”, but here one would more usually say: Ich habe eine halbe Stelle.
