Etymology[edit]

Compound of hof +‎ -e- +‎ zate, the first vowel is typical for dialects from Twente and Drenthe. Cf. Middle Low German hōvesâte. Not attested in Middle Dutch, but often supposed to have existed at that stage.[1]
