Etymology[edit]
From Ottoman Turkish هر شی, from now dated Persian هر شیء (har šey', “everything”, literally “each thing”), from هر (har, “each, every”) + شیء (“thing, object”), the latter being a borrowing from Arabic شَيْء (šayʔ, “thing”).
