Etymology

From (deprecated template usage) [etyl] Middle English hegtide, from (deprecated template usage) [etyl] Old English hēahtīd (a holy day), equivalent to high +‎ tide. Cognate with Dutch hoogtijd, German Hochzeit, Danish højtid, Swedish högtid, Icelandic hátíð, Norwegian Bokmål høytid, Norwegian Nynorsk høgtid. Compare also highday, hockday.
