From Middle Dutch hoeve, from Old Dutch houva, hoba, from Proto-Germanic *hōbō(plot of land). Cognates include German Hube, Old Saxon hōƀa; beyond the Germanic languages it is related to Ancient Greek κῆπος(kêpos, garden, orchard).
