From Old Spanish ostal, hostal, borrowed from Old Occitan ostal[1], from Late Latin hospitāle (shelter, hospice, guesthouse), from Latin hospitālis (of a host or guest; hospitable), from hospes (host, guest). Doublet of hospital and hotel.
