Etymology

From Old Spanish fumeyar, from Latin fūmigāre, present active infinitive of fūmigō[1]. Equivalent to humo +‎ -ear. Compare Galician and Portuguese fumegar, Asturian fumiar. See also fumigar, a borrowed doublet.
