1. (mathematics) hypotenuse (the side of a right triangle opposite the right angle)

   D’après le théorème de Pythagore, le carré de la longueur de l’hypoténuse d’un triangle rectangle est égal à la somme des carrés des longueurs des côtés de l’angle droit.

   According to Pythagoras' theorem, the square of the length of the hypotenuse of a right-angled triangle (UK) or right triangle (US) is equal to the sum of the squares of the sides that make up the right angle.
