Borrowed from (c. 16th-18th century) Early Modern Spanish evangelio. In Early Modern Spanish, Spanish ⟨g⟩ (before ⟨e⟩ or ⟨i⟩) was pronounced /ʃ/. /ʃ/ became /s/ as common with other early borrowings (compare sabon, singkamas, sugal, sugarol, saro, and tasa). Doublet of Ebanghelyo.
