Etymology[edit]

A literary loan from Icelandic íþrótt, during a surging interest for Norse culture and literature during the 17th century. Cognate to Old Swedish iþræt (profession, craft) and Early Modern Swedish idrett, idrätt (occupation), Danish idræt, all from Old Norse íþrótt, from + þróttr.
