Etymology

Compound of indiaan (native American, Indian) +‎ -en- +‎ verhaal (story). The fact that during the twentieth century many published stories about Native Americans were pulp fiction may have led to the meaning “urban legend”.

  • Audio:(file)
  • Hyphenation: in‧di‧a‧nen‧ver‧haal
