Finnish[edit]

Etymology[edit]

Pronunciation[edit]

  • Hyphenation: it‧sen‧sä
  • IPA(key): /ˈitsensæ(ʔ)/

Pronoun[edit]

itsensä

  1. (reflexive) The third-person singular and plural of the reflexive pronoun, himself, herself; itself; oneself; themselves.

Inflection[edit]

  • All the cases, except for the genitive and the illative, have a shortened form (see the usage notes of -nsä). Both the forms are acceptable in standard Finnish.

Usage notes[edit]

  • Note that this pronoun has no nominative form.
  • If this pronoun is an object of a genitive-requiring postposition, the possessive suffix is not appended to the postposition — because it is already in this pronoun:
hänen kanssansa = with him/her
heidän kanssansa = with them (only of people)
itsensä kanssa = with himself/herself/themselves/itself/oneself
