From Proto-Slavic *junъ ‎(young) (from Proto-Indo-European *h₂yuh₁en-) + *-akъ (masculine nominalizing suffix cognate to Slovak "-ák"). Cognate with Church Slavonic юнакъ ‎(junakŭ), Czech jonák (Moravian Czech junák), Polish junak, Bulgarian юнак ‎(junak).
