      The mechanism of colon damage by SPS is not known, but according to a study, in 9 of 11 patients who received SPS in sorbitol solution, the endoscopic examination of the upper GI tract showed kayexalate crystals adhered to the damaged mucosa of the esophagus, stomach and the duodenum, suggestive of the damaging effect of SPS.
