From Old Norse kirkja, from Old English cirice, from Proto-West Germanic *kirikā (whence also Old High German chirihha), from Byzantine Greek κυριακόν (kuriakón) (δόμα) ‘Lord's (house)’, from Ancient Greek κύριος (kúrios, lord).
