From Proto-Balto-Slavic *kirsnos, from Proto-Indo-European *kr̥snós(black). Cognates include Lithuanian kir̃snas(black), Old Church Slavonic чрънъ(črŭnŭ, black) and Sanskrit कृष्ण(kṛṣṇá, black).
