From Proto-Balto-Slavic *kiršnas, from Proto-Indo-European *kr̥snós (black). Cognate with Old Prussian kirsnan (black), Proto-Slavic *čьrnъ (black), Sanskrit कृष्ण (kṛṣṇá, black).
