From Old Norse klubba with uncertain origin. Cognate with Norwegian Nynorsk klubbe and English club. Probably related to Danish kølle and Norwegian Nynorsk kolv. This etymology is incomplete. You can help Wiktionary by elaborating on the origins of this term.
