Etymology
Derived from the verb knist (“to itch”) (q.v.). Some dialectal variants (knausis, knauslis, knusis) have the same basic root ((deprecated template usage) [etyl] Proto-Indo-European *ken-, *kn-), but with a different suffix and/or ablaut form.[1]
