From Ottoman Turkish قوف (kof), ultimately from Proto-Turkic *kobu- (hollow, cavity). Cognate with Old Turkic [script needed] (koɣï), [script needed] (kowï, empty, hollow),[1] Karakhanid [script needed] (qowï, empty, rotten), Kyrgyz коо (koo, hollow), etc.
