Etymology

From Common Albanian *krœ̄n, with lengthening of vowel before the final *-n, from *krœn, with an apocoped ending from an earlier Common Albanian *krœni. This was inherited from Proto-Albanian *kroni, with i-umlaut, from an older *krā̊niyə. This follows Pre-Proto-Albanian *krā́niyàd < *krāniyan < *kraʰániya-, inherited from Proto-Indo-European *ḱr̥h₂sóniyos (“skull, head”).^[1] Compare Ancient Greek κρανίον (kraníon, “skull”).^[2]
