Etymology 1

[edit]

Inherited from Danish læder, from Old Norse leðr, from Proto-Germanic *leþrą (leather), which see for cognates and further origin. The contracted spelling lær was in use in older Danish and the according pronunciation was still common in the 20th century. In Bokmål it was reinforced by native Norwegian dialects (cf. Nynorsk lêr). See also klær, vær.
