Etymology[edit]

From an unattested *lënd < *lenta (cf. lëndë), from Proto-Indo-European *lento-(bendsome, resilient). Akin to Lithuanian leñtas(still, quite), Latin lentus(supple), English lithe(supple), Danish and German lind(mild). Possibly a nasal variant of ledh 'to caress, stroke'.
