From Proto-Slavic *lěpъ (shapely). Cognate with Upper Sorbian lěpši, Polish lepszy, Slovak lepší, Old Church Slavonic лѣпъ (lěpŭ, beautiful), dialectal Russian ле́пший (lépšij).
