Etymology[edit]

From leggja á (to put on), from leggja (to put, to lay) and á (on) and minnið (the memory) the definite article accusative singular of minni (memory).

Noun[edit]

leggja á minnið (weak verb, third-person singular past indicative lagði á minnið, supine lagt á minnið)

  1. (transitive, governs the accusative) to keep in mind, to memorise, to study, to learn
    Allir þurfa að leggja reglurnar á minnið.
    Everybody needs to memorise the rules.

Usage notes[edit]

  • The thing or object which is being memorised or kept in mind is used between leggja and á minnið (on memory) in the accusative form:
    Við þurfum að leggja alla bókina á minnið fyrir prófið!
    We need to memorise the whole book for the test.
