Etymology[edit]

From (obsolete) genus name Leptocephalus, equivalent to Ancient Greek λεπτός (leptós, thin, slim) + κεφαλή (kephalḗ, head).

  1. The flat, transparent larva of an eel, originally thought to be a distinct species.
