Ultimately from Proto-Germanic *ludraz (useless; worthless; bad). Compare Old Norse loddari (juggler; tramp), Old High German lotar (vain; void; insignificant), Dutch lodder (a wanton), Old English loddere (pauper, beggar) and English lither. See also lotterig (slovenly) and lüderlic (slovenly)
