From Old English lūcan (to pluck out, pull up), from Proto-West Germanic *lūkan, from Proto-Germanic *lūkaną, *leukaną (to break, pluck, pull), from Proto-Indo-European *lūǵ- (to break). Cognate with Middle Low German lūken (to pull, pull up), German liechen (to pluck), Danish luge (to hatch), Latin luctor (wrestle, fight, verb).
