Etymology[edit]

From Proto-Balto-Slavic *meilas, from Proto-Indo-European *meyh₁l-o-s, from *meyh₁- (soft, tender). Cognate with Lithuanian mielas (nice, sweet, cute, dear), Old Prussian mijls (sweet, dear), Proto-Slavic *mìlъ (soft, mild, gentle, agreeable, pleasant, sweet, dear)) and Latin mītis (weak, tender, soft).
