From Proto-Polynesian *mona,[1][2] from Proto-Central Pacific *moña, from Proto-Oceanic *moñak,[3] from Proto-Eastern Malayo-Polynesian *moñak, from Proto-Central-Eastern Malayo-Polynesian *məñak, from Proto-Malayo-Polynesian *məñak. Cognates include Hawaiian mona, momona (“fat, soft, sweet”) and Tahitian momona (“sweet, tasty”).
