[edit]From madrasah + ibtidaiah, from Arabic اَلْمَدْرَسَة اَلاِبْتِدَائِيَّة (al-madrasa(t) al-ibtidāʔiyya) as اِبْتِدَائِيَّة (ibtidāʔiyya, “primary, elementary”) + مَدْرَسَة (madrasa).

[edit]In Indonesia, sekolah dasar is used by school which is under supervision of Ministry of Education. Islamic school supervised by Ministry of Religious Affairs use madrasah ibtidaiyah.
