Usage notes

[edit]

Common and well established in Quebec French and more generally in Canadian French. The verb occurs intransitively (magasiner “to shop”, “to shop around”), transitively (magasiner une voiture, magasiner des assurances), and reflexively (se magasiner quelque chose). It is frequently used of comparison-shopping for products or services such as insurance, loans, or telecommunications plans. In France and much of the Francophonie outside North America, expressions such as faire les magasins, faire les boutiques, or faire du shopping are generally more common, and magasiner is usually regarded as a Canadianism.
