Via Middle English from Middle Dutch malemeseye, via Old French from Ancient Greek Μονεμβασία, from μόνος ‎(mónos) + ἔμβασις ‎(émbasis, entering into) (ἐν ‎(en) + βάσις ‎(básis)).
